Little Opera - We Make Opera Happen

About Little Opera

Little Opera was founded by Aviv Ron, Conductor and Musical Director of the Ramat Gan Israeli Chamber Orchestra, and stage director Julia Pevzner.

The mission of this opera ensemble is simple: it is to offer their audience high quality productions of chamber opera and musical theatre. Little Opera embraces a wide repertoire, ranging from baroque opera to contemporary world premiered pieces, by Israeli as well as foreign composers.

The collaboration of Ron and Pevzner first started in 2001. when they performed the world premiere of the chamber opera “Inn of Spirits” by Moshe Zorman, based on a classical play by Nathan Alterman, at the Tel Aviv Festival of Performing Arts.

Since its foundation in 2006, Little Opera has produced Pergolesi’s “La Serva Padrona”, Telemann’s “Pimpinone”, Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Mozart and Salieri” performed along with Russian romances, Poulenc’s mono-opera “La Voix Humaine”, Menotti’s “Telephone”, Mozart’s “Bastien and Bastienna” and recently, “The Diary of One Who Disappeared” by Leos Janacek in a new arrangement by the late Zeev Steinberg, premiered at the Voice of Music Festival at the Upper Galilee in K’far Blum this summer.

This very diverse repertoire (a “typical” baroque comedy like Pergolesi’s “La Serva Padrona” next to Pushkin’s “little tragedy” Mozart and Salieri”, very well known to public through Forman’s film “Amadeus” ) is an important part of our artistic “credo”. We perform some of the pieces in their original language with surtitles in Hebrew. Some pieces are sung in Hebrew as well.

Little Opera has collaborated with the Ramat Gan Israeli Chamber Orchestra, the Beer Sheva Sinfonietta and the Voice of Music at the Upper Galilee Festival. We aspire to widen our operatic repertoire as well as experiment new exciting genres of musical theatre.

Since 2010, Little Opera enjoys the generous support of the Israeli Ministry of Culture.

Why I founded Little Opera

picture

“I simply had to respond to the fact that Israel has no national chamber opera. This genre is so beautiful and advanced... My dream is to establish Little Opera as an institution with its own stage and theatre. It is a long way to go, but the way is the goal."
Aviv Ron
